CORRUPTION IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM MOST DANGEROUS FOR BULGARIA- VELCHEV Sofia_echo - 2007/4/23
The most dangerous form of corruption is the one affecting the justice system, Prosecutor- General Boris Velchev said.
Corruption cannot be countered if the justice system itself is affected and lacks the will to counteract it, Velchev said during a forum on corruption in Bulgaria and the ways to counter it.
Most people believe that police and prosecution are the only institutions that should work against corruption, which is not true, Velchev said. Many are unaware of the work that customs agents, taxation officers and other inspection offices in Bulgaria do.
The prosecution is not running away from responsibility, Velchev said, but the tasks should be distributed evenly throughout all inspection bodies.
Corruption should be countered at all levels. It is incorrect to target only high-level corruption, Velchev said as quoted by Focus news agency.
