UNDP's Bulgaria-born Moscow head is being probed over a major fraud, the Moscow Times said Wednesday.

Stefan Vassilev and a group of other staff members are suspected of stealing USD 1.2 million over 2000-2004, according to the report. It said that the suspects had probably forged contracts, tender documents invoices and payment orders.

Vassilev has been suspended from his duties until the probe is complete. The Moscow Times recalled that he has been heading the Moscow office of UNDP since 2003.

Four UNDP workers are being probed, the news story said.

Since opening in 1997, the office has channeled more than USD 56 million into projects promoting democracy, poverty reduction and economic development, they said.
