POLITICAL WILL AND EFFORT NEEDED TO COUNTER CORRUPTION IN BULGARIA- VASSILEV Focus - 2007/4/23
Strong political will is a guarantee that corruption will be dealt with, State Administration Minister Nikolai Vassilev said.
Vassilev is one of the officials to take part in the social forum on countering corruption in Bulgaria. The forum is carried out through the support of the Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD).
Some of the measures undertaken to minimise corruption within the administration include decreasing the number of employees, lowering taxation and liberalisation of public services, Vassilev said.
State administration laws and the introduction of e-governance are some of the developments that have already been worked on to deal with corruption, Vassilev said.
The lack of co-operation between state institutions and NGOs is one of the setbacks, the minister said.
Other forum participants include Interior Minister Roumen Petkov, US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle, Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov and the chair of the Supreme Administrative Court Konstantin Penchev.
