Bulgarian FP6 participants recognised ALL - 2007/2/8
A number of Bulgarian research organisations were presented with the Crystal Prize for their high levels of participation in the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). The awards were presented at a national event to launch the Seventh Framework Programme on 31 January.

Bulgarian researchers were involved in 270 projects under FP6, and received a total of ˆ32 million from the European Commission.

The best performing university was named as Sofia University, which participated in 22 projects under FP6. The university opened in 1888, and today offers 83 degree courses in the humanities and natural sciences.

The most successful research institute in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was the Institute for Parallel Processing. The institute was involved in 13 projects in FP6.

The most successful small company in FP6 was the Sirma Group Corporation. The company was established in 1992, and has developed a process for the creation and development of high-tech companies. It participated in 11 projects under FP6.

An award was presented to Professor Yordan Stamenov and his research group, which were judged to be the most active research group in FP6. Professor Stamenov is the director and research manager of the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy, and his team was involved in nine FP6 projects.

Prizes were also awarded to: the most successful non-governmental organisation (NGO); the best national contact point (NCP); the university that received the most EU funding; the most active regional university in Bulgaria; the most successful research institute of the National Centre for Agrarian Sciences; the journalist that gave the most coverage to FP6; and social sciences and humanities institute for participation in FP6. A prize was also awarded to Bulgaria's coordinator for FP6 for her coordination of the programme nationally.
