International security conference opens in Sofia
(Новина на деня) - 2005/10/28
In the wake of massive police actions against the organized crime after the murder of a well-known Bulgarian banker on Wednesday, a two-day international form on the security and trans-border crime opened in Sofia on Friday. Dr. Ognian Shentov, Chairman of CSD, and the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Policy Goran Bankov opened the forum. The international conference EU Prospects and Security in South Eastern Europe: Hidden Economy, Transborder Crime and Development, organized by the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) with the support of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Japan Foundation, takes place in Hilton hotel in Sofia.
The conference is a continuation of CSD efforts to assess the social, business, national and regional aspects of security in the Southeast European countries in the context of the EU enlargement, more specifically in the areas of informal economy, corruption, and illegal cross-border activities which remain major obstacles to the development in the region and represent serious threats to the European security.
In this context, the main objective of the event is to contribute to the design of an approach to the informal economy, informal labour and undeclared work, and transborder crime that is both targeted and comprehensive. To achieve this, it will bring together researchers from prominent scientific institutions in Europe to share their views and discuss possible solutions of the above problems.
